Johann Joachim Lorbach joined FAO on 2 September 1996.He will work with FOPH in the field of forest engineering concentrating on aspects of environmentally sound forest harvesting and transport. Before joining FOPH Mr. Lorbach served as director of a forest district and head of a forest workers training school in southwest Germany. He has served as a team leader and consultant on forestry projects in East Asia and Southeast Asia. These projects with the German Agency of Technical Cooperation, GTZ, included forest road construction, forest harvesting, transportation, vocational training, and practical training. He believes that it is absolutely necessary to adapt forestry machinery, forestry techniques, forest road design and construction, harvesting operations, and transportation systems to the requirements of a healthy environment worldwide. One step to do so is to improve information and training aids to make people more aware of this necessity.
