International Union of Forest Research Organizations

11th CONGRESS, ROME 1953

Following the generous invitation of the Italian Government, the I.U.F.R.O. will hold its Eleventh Congress at Rome and in Sicily from the end of September until the middle of October 1963.

The scientific discussions will include the following topics:

Protective influence of shelterbelts.
Delimitation of vegetation areas according to climate.
Principles to be used for classification of vegetation.
Provenance tests and forest tree breeding.
Grading of stands for thinning.
Silvicultural methods and possibilities for preventing pests and diseases.
Rapid determination of increment.
Growth and yield in unmanaged and managed forests.
Forest valuation.
Techniques and terminology of work studies.
Influence of diameter growth on the technical properties of wood.

Representatives of the forestry sciences of all countries, as well as their wives, are cordially invited to participate in this Congress.

The Congress will meet for 4 ½ , days in Rome, followed by a study tour of 8 days in Sicily. Most of the scientific discussions and administrative meetings will, by agreement with FAO, be held in Rome. The study tour in Sicily will clear principally with the great afforestation work in progress shore, with the grouping of the natural forest vegetation according to height above sea level, especially on Mt. Etna, and with tests on the cultivation of various exotic tree species.

The individual subscription fee, which also entitles the subscriber to a volume of the proceedings of the Congress, will be about 6,000 Lire. Ladies will not pay any subscription fee.

Scientists who are not members of the Union may participate in the scientific discussions in Rome on payment of this fee. They should inform the chairman of the organizing committee, Professor Aldo Pavari, Via delle Cascine 1, Florence, Italy, as soon as possible of their intention to participate. The study tour in Sicily, however, will be reserved for representatives of member institutes, associate members and their wives.

The organizing committee will take care of the hotel reservations in Rome. Hotel costs. including meals will vary between 4,000 and 8,000 Lire a day, according to the category of hotel required by participants. For the study tour in Sicily, a single fee will be payable to the organizing committee to cover all expenses, namely: travel from Rome to Catania (train), travel in Sicily (car), and hotels and meals in Sicily. First or second class hotels and rail tickets will be available. According to provisional estimates, the overall cost will be 50,000 Lire for the former and 36,000 Lire for the latter. The cost of a sleeping-car ticket Rome-Catania is not included.
