    One of the legacies of saffron farming practice for centuries in and around the Pampore Karewas of Kashmir in India is that this ancient farming system continues to inspire family farmers and local communities through their livelihood security that it provides for more than 17,000 farm families. Kashmiri village women contribute to this agriculture heritage site through traditional tilling to flower picking over 3,200 hectares dedicated to the legendary saffron crop cultivation at Pampore. Howev er, it has been facing grave challenges of sustainability and livelihood security with urgent need to adopt appropriate technologies, inter-alia, to address water vagaries, productivity loss and market volatilities. Thanks to GIAHS (Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System programme hosted by FAO of the UN at Rome), appropriately innovative scientific and technical approaches have been and are being tested and adopted at the pilot site for dynamically adapting to changing environment with due awareness-raising.

    Chinese Torreya (Torreya grandis cv. Merrillii) is a quality grafting plant resulting, over time, from careful artificial selection. Its main properties and economic values are different from other types of Torreya grandis and it can be used for nuts, medicine, logs, oil, ornaments, and environmental protection purposes. The Kuaiji mountain is the origin place of Chinese Torreya with the most well preserved ancient Torreya community, and more than 80% Chinese Torreya production is from this area . The Kuaijishan Ancient Chinese Torreya Community has over 2000 years of history. This Kuaijishan ancient community developed the application of grafting techniques in ancient China, which makes it a rare "living fossil" of ancient grafting and artificial selection techniques. The age of the oldest existing Chinese Torreya tree, already tested by experiments, is 1431 years, which might be the oldest living artificial grafted specimen in China. In addition, the Kuaijishan Ancient Chinese Torreya Community is a harmonious system that was created by the people of Shaoxing a long time ago that prevents soil erosion while providing diverse ‘high value’ economic products from the trees.

    As both food and medicine, ume [Prunus mume, Japanese apricot] have been a highly valued crop in Japan from about 1300 years ago. Pickled ume, called umeboshi, keep well and have excellent medicinal effects including food poisoning prevention and recovery from fatigue, and have been consumed on a daily basis as a Japanese side dish. The Minabe-Tanabe ume system is a unique system which has sustainably produced high-quality ume by making use of slopes with rudaceous soil, which is poor in nutrien ts. The production of ume in this region comes to about 44,000 t annually (2012), accounting for about 50% of Japan’s total production. Yield per unit area is high, at about 1.5 t per 10 a, which is about twice that of Japan’s other ume-producing districts.
