Public policies for family farming – when done appropriately – provide a perfect match between different policy areas related to productive, economic, social, environmental and cultural dimensions of sustainable food systems. The Learning framework for inclusive, integrated and innovative public policy cycles for family farming was developed under the framework of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming (2019–2028) to support policymakers, family farmers’ organizations and other relevant stakeholders to increase their understanding of public policy cycles and family farming related policies. This technical and methodological capacity development programme is adaptable to local, national or regional priorities. It offers a holistic perspective to building knowledge and capacity of the various actors involved in the design, implementation and review of effective and coherent policies and programmes. This learning framework responds to the needs of multiple actors, expressed during the UNDFF pre-consultation process, to identify ways to create truly effective and efficient policy frameworks for family farming, and to better engage and participate during policy processes. To provide an appropriate answer to these needs the learning framework was designed through a participatory process building on the experience of governments and family farmers’ organizations, researchers and UN staff, gathering inputs from all relevant actors around the world.

TECA is an FAO online platform for the exchange and sharing of agricultural technologies and practices for smallholder farmers and producers. The platform facilitates the transformation process in rural areas by making relevant and innovative technologies available to farmers in the field. In doing so, TECA further enhances the access to knowledge of smallholder producers in rural areas increasing their capacity to innovate and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This catalogue promotes a set of successful innovations for farmers on the occasion of the FAO International Symposium on Agricultural Innovation for Family Farmers: Unlocking the potential of agricultural innovation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, which will be celebrated in FAO Headquarters on 2123 November 2018. The technologies presented are concrete actions that have solved specific development challenges and promote sustainable and inclusive rural transformations. The technologies and practices are designed following the FAOTECA platform standards and have been tested and refined in the field. Each practice supports smallholder farmers and those providing advisory services to agricultural producers, to identify specific needs, select the correct practices and to implement technologies adequately. Developed with the help of FAO in cooperation with the FAO Departments of Agriculture and Consumer Protection, the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture and other key partners, the GIZ, ICRAF, IFOAM and Swisscontact, this catalogue aims at illustrating how sharing knowledge may unlock innovation throughout the farming process.

The last 15 years in Latin America have been marked by the emergence and consolidation of family farming and the need to develop differentiated public policies Many countries have experimented with new institutional architectures and public policies, which have been designed and, in some cases, implemented yet much remains to be done to consolidate this sector In addition, the economic and political landscape in the region is necessitating a revision of the policies that have been developed and their applicability, while raising the need for innovations that will make it possible to boost family farming and consolidate it as a key sector for eradicating hunger, rural poverty and achieving the proposed Sustainable Development Goals ( The recent approval by the UNDFF offers an exceptional opportunity to significantly contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in an inclusive, collaborative and coherent manner The aims of the UNDFF are to recognize the importance of family farmers and empower them as key agents of change in the transformation of food systems, by making them more efficient and sustainable In addition, the UNDFF aims to link their importance with environmental, health and nutrition, their role in the fight against poverty and inequality, the strengthening of the social fabric in rural territories and the revitalization of the respective economies.
