The World Bank and The Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) are hosting a webinar on new and innovative satellite-based tools and approaches in monitoring of dry forest. The webinar will focus on introducing the tools developed by the Satellite Monitoring for Forest Management (SMFM) project by the World Bank in 2017–2020.

These new tools were developed under the SMFM project and give forest managers in dry forest countries unprecedented possibilities to use satellite resources in assessing forest cover and biomass. They provide also dense, near real time data to monitor change and analyze the drivers of forest change.

In the webinar the team that developed the new tools will introduce how they will help in monitoring and managing dry forests; how this will change forest agencies and where do we go next

The webinar will start with an introduction of the project followed by a presentation of the big picture and future EO development, impacts of new technology on forest agencies and institutions. The speakers will also present each SMFM tool followed by cases studies and hands-on experiences in Mozambique, Namibia, and Zambia.

Opening Remarks: Karin Kemper, Global Director, Environment, Natural Resources & Blue Economy GP, World Bank

Moderator: Laura Ivers, Senior External Affairs Officer, Environment, Natural Resources & Blue Economy GP, World Bank
