SilvaCarbon workshop: South-South Exchange on Carbon Emissions Estimation and Carbon Accounting Standards

Location
Bogotá, Colombia
06 May 2024 - 08 May 2024

The workshop "Carbon Emission Reporting Standards for Access to Carbon Markets", hosted by GFOI partner Silvacarbon, will be held from 6 to 8 May 2024 in Bogotá, Colombia. This will serve as a South-South exchange in Latin America to facilitate knowledge and experience-sharing among countries and development partners on carbon accounting standards.

The workshop will focus on sharing lessons learned from the estimation of greenhouse gas emissions for reporting to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the context of “Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries” (REDD+).

Participants will also share their experiences with the related yet different process of accounting for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions according to a carbon standard(s) for participation in a carbon market(s). Although these mechanisms are distinct, their processes are interconnected and hence the relationship between the two can be confusing. This workshop helps to clarify some of these issues by sharing lessons learned from countries who have undertaken both processes with other countries who may still be grappling with the different processes.

The transition from biennial update reporting (BUR) to biennial transparency reporting (BRT) is also to be discussed in this workshop. Moreover, this event is a key opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with these topics with a forward-thinking approach.

The participants will include government officials responsible for climate policy and carbon market regulation, representatives of international organizations and agencies involved in carbon market governance, and experts in climate change, carbon accounting and environmental management in Latin America. Although the workshop is closed, the results will be available to the public.
