Synopsis (short abstract) Following the Intergovernmental Group Meeting on Tea in New Delhi in 2010, FAO was requested by the Government of Kenya to assist with a climate change impact assessment of tea in Kenya and to help develop a new strategy to confront its effects. This report is the outcome of a two-year project in Kenya and offers the findings from an integrated climate impact assessment. The analysis covered (i) historical and future links between climate parameters and tea yields, (ii) a carbon life cycle analy sis, (iii) tea management scenarios under climate change using aquacrop model, and (iv) a socio-economic analysis of small holder tea farms and households and their coping options under climate change. The report also summarizes the core elements of an inclusive, multi-stakeholder-led new climate-compatible strategy for tea.

Working within FAO’s main efforts of sustainable food security, nutrition and productivity, the Mitigation of Climate Change in Agriculture (MICCA) Programme‘s main goal is to help developing countries contribute to climate change mitigation in agriculture and move towards low‐carbon emission agriculture. In Kenya, the MICCA Programme, in collaboration with the East African Dairy Development Project (EADD), is focusing on introducing climate‐smart agriculture into the livestock sector. The objec tive of this socio‐economic survey is to collect data on current livelihoods and agricultural practices, and gain a greater knowledge about the impacts of climate change among small‐holder farmers in the project areas. The survey design should be utilized in the same way or adjusted as a tool to evaluate the outcomes and impacts on the socio‐economic situation of other MICCA Programme activities, such as capacity development and greenhouse gas assessments. In the survey, 357 households were visi ted by six enumerators in six locations at the Kaptumo EADD site. Focus groups and key informants were also interviewed. The households were selected randomly and are representative of the locations. This brief summarises available evidence on the impact of cattle and poultry on the environment in Kenya, building on available research reports and papers. It explores the correlations between livestock and greenhouse gases; livestock and water; livestock and grasslands; and livestock and biodiversity. When data is available, it provides specific evidence of the impact of cattle and poultry production systems on the environment. These were characterized by national stakeholders - including the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Health - as part of the implementation of a One Health approach aimed at assessing the current and long-term impact of livestock on the economy and people’s livelihoods, on public health and on the environment.

This publication was commissioned under the auspices of the project “FAO technical support to the COMESA-EAC-SADC program on climate change adaptation and mitigation in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSRO/RAF/307/COM)”. The study goal was to consult with stakeholders, including government departments, the private sector, civil society organizations, development partners, research institutions and NGOs involved in current and past climate-smart agriculture initiatives in the Eastern Africa (EA) sub -region, to map, review, analyse and synthesize major past and current CSA initiatives, in order to document the key stakeholders involved, the policies in place and the constraints, challenges, opportunities and enabling factors to adoption of climate-smart agriculture practices and technologies in the subregion.
