Growing Quinoa in Lithuania

As part of the celebrations that mark the International Year of Quinoa 2013, in collaboration with FAO, the Lithuanian Ministry of Agriculture and the Embassy of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Lithuania is successfully growing the Andean crop. The permanent representative of Lithuania to FAO, Mr. Kestutis Tarnauskas, was inspired by quinoa’s great adaptability to diverse climatic conditions and its significant nutritional qualities.

The seeds are being grown in two locations in central Lithuania: the research centre in Babtai and a second pilot plot in Kaisiadorys. Two varieties of quinoa were planted; Puno and Titicaca, both are growing fast and adapting well to Lithuania’s climate and soil.

The purpose of this exercise was to see how different varieties of quinoa would adapt to this new environment. The next step will be to draft a plan of action built on lessons learned. Based on this, the crop will be promoted in the hope that smallholders will be encouraged to plant it, stimulating its uptake for culinary as well as industrial purposes. For further information on quinoa’s uses see: http://www.fao.org/quinoa-2013/what-is-quinoa/use/en

As Mr. Tarnauskas put it: “All big actions start from simple things”.
