Today, however, this biodiversity is seriously threatened and millions of hectares of forests are lost every year. Community forest management (CFM) is one of the most promising solutions to finding a compromise between the preservation of nature and economic development. Currently, CFM is a strategic alternative that must be promoted and upscaled in order to conserve, sustainably manage and...
Transforming food systems can deliver on a multitude of commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). How we produce, process, trade and consume food products influences poverty (SDG 1), good health and well-being (SDG 3), greenhouse gas emissions and the ability to adapt to a changing climate (SDG 13), and biodiversity loss and deforestation (SDG 15)- to name just a few. However, the challenge of achieving healthy, sustainable and inclusive food systems lies in their complexity. Concerted and concurrent actions are required across both forestry and agriculture sectors. These challenges were explored during a World Forestry Week event, held alongside the Committee on Forestry (COFO).   Forest protection has long been a primary strategy to reduce forest conversion, but it has...
The UN-REDD Programme has announced a USD 2 million project supported by the Government of Norway that will help make mangrove sustainable management, restoration and protection an integral part of Myanmar’s efforts to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as part of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The “Integrating mangroves into REDD+ Implementation in Myanmar” initiative, announced today at the 3 rd Mekong Mangrove Forum, focuses on tackling Myanmar’s destruction and degradation of mangrove ecosystems. This will help the country reach its climate mitigation targets within its NDCs and support livelihoods of mangrove forest communities. Myanmar is home to the third most...
