6. COMMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This Seminar/Study Tour can be considered highly successful. That the general aim for which it was organized was achieved was clearly shown by the stimulating discussions that followed the lectures and visits.

The lectures themselves were comprehensive and authoritative and the field visits very instructive. The participants suggested follow-up programmes such as regional seminars or training centres on the subject which seems useful in view of the regional variations in emphasis and interest. For instance, species-wise, the African region will deal more with tilapia, Europe with common carp and Asia and the Far East with the Indian and Chinese species of cyprinids. It was also suggested that FAO should promote or assist programmes in this field in developing countries, and when feasible in the future hold a world symposium on this subject.
