III - CONSERVATION OF FOREST GENETIC RESOURCES

3-1 The most important threats to forest genetic resources

They are as follows:

- absence of strong defensive action against plant pests (Miconia primarily) for the infested islands

- unsustainable use of wood for carving (sandal, miro, tou...)

- absence of sustainable management and lack of continuity in forest programmes or nature conservation

- absence of “eco-citizenship”

- un-controlled grazing

3-2 Protected areas

Terrestrial zones having a general conservation statute rarely have a detailed inventory, and there have been a number of projects that have not been implemented.

The problem for these parks is the implementation of an effective management structure.
