3.1 Senegal-Mauritanian Zone

Between 1966 and 1977 fishing by the principal countries exploiting the coastal pelagic fish was the following:

BERMUDA:

purse seine fishing by a fleet of seine vessels of 30-35 m supplying the 'Interpêche' factory ship;

BULGARIA:

bottom and pelagic trawling with large tonnage factory trawlers;

GERMAN
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC:

bottom and pelagic trawling with large capacity factory trawlers; occasional fishing with purse seines;

GAMBIA:

fishing with gillnets (encircling nets and setnets) worked from canoes;

GHANA:

bottom and pelagic trawls with large tonnage factory trawlers (60-65 m) until 1972 and, starting in 1973, a fleet of purse seine vessels (25 m) based in Gambia;

GUINEA:

no information; artisanal fishing from canoes;

GUINEA-BISSAU:

fishing from canoes; catches negligible as regards species considered here;

JAPAN:

bottom trawlers of different tonnages;

MAURITANIA:

purse seine fishing with small seine vessels (15-25 m) of the Canaries fleet;

NORWAY:

purse seine fishing by two fleets of seine vessels of about 35 m serving two factory ships (ASTRA and NORDGLOBAL);

POLAND:

bottom and pelagic trawling with freezer-trawlers (1 600 to 2 500 HP);

REPUBLIC OF
SOUTH AFRICA:

purse seine fishing by several fleets of seine vessels (about 30 m) supplying four factory ships;

ROMANIA:

bottom and pelagic trawling from factory trawlers of large tonnage;

SENEGAL:

purse seine fishing with small vessels (20-25 m) and canoes; line-fishing of secondary importance;

USSR:

bottom and pelagic fishing with large (2 000 GRT) and medium (600 GRT) freezer-trawlers, plus complementary purse seine fishing with medium size vessels (600 GRT).

Table 5 summarizes by type of fishing gear the length of exploitation and available effort data. Annual figures for fishing effort for the largest fleets are given in Table 6. Information on the size of species caught are set forth in Table 7.

no information; artisanal canoe fishing probable;

SIERRA LEONE:

fishing with ring nets (gillnets and a few purse seines) from canoes;

USSR:

pelagic trawling with medium tonnage trawlers (600 t) and purse seine fishing with medium size boats.

Data on fishing effort are available for the Ivory Coast and USSR fleets.
