CURRENT SITUATION

Rainfall this year has been generally favourable for major crop growing areas in the north. Widespread and heavy rains fell over many parts of the country in January and February, benefiting crops to be harvested from April. The heavy rains also resulted in extensive flooding along the Shire and Luo rivers in February, displacing over 80 000 people. Preliminary estimates of the maize crop point to an above average harvest, close to last year’s level.

As a result of two consecutive years of good cereal harvest, the food supply situation is expected to be satisfactory during the marketing year 1997/98. The country should be able to meet its domestic cereal needs and have an export potential of maize.
