Physical oceanography
As in the case of Côte d'Ivoire, the two Ghanaian upwelling indices should be calculated, one concerning the major upwelling, the other the minor upwelling. The minimum time interval should be a fortnight.
The coastal transect should be maintained in Côte d'Ivoire and in Ghana.
Collection of data on Côte d'Ivoire rivers for updating of the Binet model should be pursued further.
Statistics
Monthly CPUEs should be calculated for Sardinella aurita and Sardinella maderensis in Vridi, Côte d'Ivoire.
Collection of data on Ghanaian beach seine catches and effort should be continued (for S. aurita and S. maderensis) and a sampling plan should be drawn up for Côte d'Ivoire beach seine fishery.
Processing of data on the beach seine fishery in order to obtain real time values should be accelerated.
Importance of beach seine fishery in western Côte d'Ivoire should be assessed in order to determine whether it is a satisfactory index of recruitment in this zone.
In the Ghanaian Poli/Ali/Watsa nets category, samples should be taken of the catches with each of these nets in order to identify differential exploitation if any. The possibility of differentiating between the three nets during the proposed frame survey should be investigated for the purpose of extrapolation.
In Côte d'Ivoire, a sampling plan should be proposed for the eastern zone and the 1985, 1986 and 1987 artisanal data should be processed.
More generally, and so as to avoid confusion, a clear distinction should be made between species during surveys.
Reliable catch sampling plans should be elaborated and maintained.
A standardized effort index should be developed (at least the number of fishing days)
Biology
Size measurements should be taken of Sardinella aurita catches in the western zone of Côte d'Ivoire and of catches with beach seines or Poli/Ali/Watsa nets in Ghana. Size measurements of Sardinella maderensis should be taken in each country involved. The same is requested for anchovy particularly as regards Ghana, and to a lesser degree, Togo as well as for Scomber japonicus upon its re-entry in any one fishery.
Collection of data on zooplankton should be pursued further in Ghana and implemented in Côte d'Ivoire.
The Côte d'Ivoire gonadosomatic indices should be calculated.
Management
Indices relative to the state of the 0+ age class of 1987 (born in 1987) should be calculated at the earliest for Sardinella aurita.
A special day or special group should be organized during the Eighth session of the CECAF Working Party on Resource Evaluation to review the state of Sardinella aurita stocks.
Fishery effort limitations should be taken into consideration.
The IDAF Project should study the impact of yield decreases of the Ghanaian Poli/Ali fleet.
