A national fish marketing survey of Zimbabwe will be carried out by ALCOM in collaboration with ZZSFP. The study shall:
quantitatively estimate current and projected demand for different categories of local and imported fish and fish products in rural and urban areas of Zimbabwe
determine consumer preferences for fish and fish products amongst high, medium and low income groups
identify food resources which directly compete with fish and fish products, estimate quantitatively the relative demands for fish and competitive food categories and identify trends in changes in preference and demand.
identify the main variables which affect market segmentation
analyse the recent trends in fish and fish product supplies, demand and pricing with particular emphasis being placed upon imported products from Namibia, South Africa and Mozambique
On the basis of interviews with suppliers, importers and fishing companies estimate the likely trends in imports of fish and fish products (with particular emphasis on horse mackerel products from Namibia and dried kapenta from Lake Cahora Bassa)
Estimate the likely effects of various levels of increase in the imports of horse mackerel, Mozambican kapenta and any other imported fish products on local fish prices, demand for local fish and indicate the likely impact of increased imports upon the local fishing industry (especially the kapenta fishery on Lake Kariba)
Determine the main distribution channels for the main categories of fish and fish products (both captured / farmed in Zimbabwe and imported) and analyse the costs and margins for the main distribution channels
Discuss the implications of the results of the study for the future development of the capture fisheries and aquaculture sector in Zimbabwe.
