Findings from regional analysis of trends in forestry education in Southeast Asia 1993-2002

Countries and institutions

Thirty-five institutions in Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam are included in this study. Among them, they offer 63 forestry programmes, dominated by first degree, accounting for 39% of the programmes analysed, followed by certificate (23%), master (18%), diploma (11%), and PhD Programs (8%) (Table 1).

The sample size per country varies. Indonesia and the Philippines have a larger offering of forestry educations under different programs than the other countries. For Laos and Vietnam, most important forestry institutions are included in this study. For Malaysia only three institutions were included, but the main university did not respond, which may bias the results for that country. In Thailand, only one institution, Kasetsart University, offers formal forestry education.
