Enrollment by country

Enrolment trends in forestry education SEAsian varies among the countries in SEAsia. Overall, enrolment per institution and program is decreasing in the Philippines, while it is increasing in Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. The sample for Malaysia may be too small to draw conclusions on enrollment. In the case of Laos and Vietnam, the increase is linked to governments' education policy. Especially in Laos, a huge increase in the number of students has taken place recently, putting great pressure on the limited resources in the educational institutions (Figure 11).

Enrollment by programme

Enrollment data per program are analysed in tables 4-8 indicating the following trends:

• Certificate level: Sharply decreasing enrollment in the Philippines; but increased enrollment in Laos
• Diploma: Increase in Indonesia and Laos, decrease in Vietnam
• First degree: Decrease in the Philippines, increased enrollment in all other countries except Indonesia.
• Master level: Decrease in the Philippine, increase in all other countries
• PhD: Decrease in Philippines and Vietnam, stagnant in Malaysia, increase in Indonesia and Thailand.

In summary, forestry enrollment is decreasing at all educational levels in the Philippines and is increasing in Indonesia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Second there is a trend towards increased enrollment at first degree and master level, while the lower educational levels are decreasing.
