1. INTRODUCTION

The Government of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, assisted by the United Nations Development Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, are engaged in the General Fishery Advisory and Training Services Project (PDY/77/003), the main purpose of which is the establishing of efficient and viable fishery industry operations, including management advice, fisheries development and planning, and training and education.

Fisheries rank among the priorities in national development policy in the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen. Despite considerable efforts and investments in fisheries in recent years, the results show great variations, mainly due to uncontrollable changes in ecological conditions in the fishing grounds of the country. Considering the need for a steady supply from this sector and the possible existing resources in the field of mariculture, the Government requested technical assistance to ascertain the feasibility of local mariculture. As part of the project operation, FAO assigned Mr J. Querellou, an Aquaculture Expert, as a consultant from 5 to 15 April 1980 for this purpose.
