SUMMARY
The feasibility of local mariculture is being examined in the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen because of the priority fisheries has in the country as a source of food and as an earner of foreign exchange, as well as a recent sharp drop in fish catches.
There is a historic background of aquaculture and some experiments are now being conducted in shrimp cultivation by a Japanese company. A potential for shrimp and fish culture is indicated in this report but it also points out that there is a lack of basic data and technology in this field in the country.
A limited survey was made of potential sites for experimental work in mariculture and several of these sites are described but a detailed national site investigation is considered necessary for balanced development. A two-step plan for research and development is proposed. The first step would involve collecting detailed scientific and technical data and experiments with various culture systems. The second step would involve implementing a small-scale feasibility project.
Details are given on objectives of the programme, the work needed to be performed and the personnel, equipment and the external technical assistance required to complete the two steps. Appendixes describe previous experimental work, potential sites visited and estimated costs to carry out the development programme.
