In view of the lack of data, technology and trained personnel in the country, external technical assistance is required to promote mariculture development in PDRY.
The immediate work programme (starting on national resources on a very limited scale in 1980) should be carried out by the end of 1981 with bilateral or multilateral technical assistance and assistance from an interested Japanese fishing company. The international contribution could consist of supporting this short-term project, which is designed to promote both “cash” and “food” mariculture.
The feasibility project could be supported in the same way and, if the results are positive, shrimp culture primarily for the purpose of earning foreign exchange, could be planned on a commercial basis with the eventual assistance of an international financial institution. Food production through development of fish culture should be fostered by means of international technical assistance.
