SUMMARY OF MR K.H. MOHAMED'S REPORT ON VISIT TO PDRY

Mr Mohamed, FAO aquaculture expert, visited PDRY from 24 May to 2 June 1979. The purpose of the mission was to provide (i) professional guidance to the shrimp breeding team and (ii) to examine the possibility of mariculture and prospects of development of shrimp and lobster fisheries. This summary concerns only the aquaculture portion.

SUMMARY

A basic description of the shrimp station is given. It emphasizes the lack of laboratory facilities and of proper recording of scientific data. It is pointed out that, despite these major limitations, the experiments succeeded from a scientific point of view.

A short description is given of the visit to the so-called Persian ponds and a very general description is included in the report.

Recommendations are: (i) to collect information on the availability of fish and shrimp seed in and around the ponds in Little Aden and other places with a view to develop mariculture; (ii) to survey the shrimp resources of the 5th and 6th Governorates; (iii) to improve or to establish a laboratory for fishery biology work and oceanographic investigations.
