Summary

Livestock husbandry and fisheries are two of the rare natural resources of Djibouti. Because of the climate, vegetative cover is very limited and transhumant management of goats and sheep is the only possible way of using the desert environment. Livestock are the only food source for the rural population. Consumption of meat from small ruminants accounts for 70 per cent of livestock output. Government hag placed a high priority on livestock development projects. These will also be used as research vehicles for the establishment of production parameters and the genetic basis for the improvement of local breeds.
