Figure 2 shows the distribution of temperature, salinity and oxygen in the profile from abt. 500 m on the slope over the shelf towards Mayaro Bay. The upper abt. 30 m forms a mixed layer with hardly any gradients, with the exception of a slightly lower salinity at the innermost station, probably the effect of Orinoco water. The isolines for temperature and salinity shows that intermediate water from well over 100 m depth over the slope is lifted up over the shelf and cover the bottom up to about 40 m depth. It seems uncertain whether this water reaches the surface euphotic layer. Figure 2 also include two stations occupied off the northeast point of Tobago showing even steeper inclination of the isolines towards the shore. Strong northwards currents, 2-3 knots were experienced in the area especially over the edge and slope.
