1. Introduction.

Survey objectives.

The general objectives of the programme as discussed and agreed at the planning meeting in Trinidad, 12-14 January are summarized in the Preliminary Report of Cruise No. I, Parts 1 and 4. In the following the objectives for Survey IV are further clarified and amended on the basis of experience from the previous surveys and from discussions with representatives from Colombia.

The hydrographic profiles occupied in Surveys 2 and 3 should be repeated. In pursuing the general objectives of describing the composition, distribution and abundance of the resources through the acoustic - and trawling surveys special considerations should be given to the following: the areas of distribution and concentration of sardinella and thread herring off the Guajira Peninsula; the areas of distribution and concentration of the squids Lolliguncula brevis southwest of Cartagena and Loligo plei east of Santa Marta; add some further tests of deep water grounds for shrimp to those of Surveys 2 and 3, and provide further information on the distribution and composition of snappers through the trawl programme for swept area estimates. Further taxonomic studies will be made for the purpose of preparing a regional species guide.
