Seasonably dry conditions prevail. Planting of maize normally starts in July with the onset of the rains on the main islands.
Seed shortages are likely, following the 2001 reduced harvest and the exceptionally
strong and unseasonable rains in mid-January. 52 000 kilograms of bean seeds
and 60 000 kilograms of maize seeds will be distributed with the assistance
of an FAO emergency project.
