For the first time, CFS has offset the carbon emissions from air travel and local commuting during CFS42 last October. Certified Emission Reduction credits were purchased through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) Climate Neutral Now platform.
Other measures that were taken included printing session documents on paper made of 30% recycled and 70% Forest Stewardship Council certified virgin pulp, the most efficient and eco-friendly compromise recommended by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the FAO Forestry Division. Also the organizers of Side Events who served refreshments were given the opportunity to choose a bio menu.
These measures were on top of the efforts already in place in FAO which includes reducing plastic consumption by giving delegates the opportunity to refill water bottles, recycling waste in separated waste bins, donation of unsold food to a local food bank and energy efficient meeting rooms for side events.
CFS is now looking to introduce a paper-smart approach to future CFS sessions in order to reduce the quantity of unused documents that are disposed of after the session.
