 Robotics for Good Youth Challenge

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in partnership with Google and backed by will.i.am as a key advocate, has launched a new initiative to bring artificial intelligence and robotics training to young people across Africa. Announced during Digital@UNGA at the UN General Assembly, the programme aims to tackle both limited connectivity and the growing digital skills gap, particularly among youth in underserved communities.

By leveraging ITU’s AI Skills Coalition and the joint ITU–UNICEF Giga Initiative, the initiative combines infrastructure and education—connecting schools to the internet while equipping students aged 10 to 18 with hands-on experience in AI and robotics. With a strong focus on inclusion, it prioritizes reaching girls and underrepresented groups, ensuring broader participation in the digital transformation.

At the core of the programme is the Robotics for Good Youth Challenge, a global competition where students design, build, and program robots to address real-world challenges—this year centered on food security. National events across Africa will serve as qualifiers for the global finale at the AI for Good Global Summit 2026 in Geneva, offering participants exposure, mentorship, and opportunities to connect with global leaders.

Key Events and How to Participate:

Robotics for Good Youth Challenge Côte d’Ivoire – Abidjan

Robotics for Good Youth Challenge Nigeria – Abuja

Robotics for Good Youth Challenge Kenya – Nairobi

Robotics for Good Youth Challenge Ghana – Accra

Why It Matters

By combining connectivity efforts with hands-on training, the initiative supports digital inclusion and empowers youth—especially in underserved communities—to become active creators in the AI-driven economy.
