Youth-led Innovations Shine at Global AgriInno Challenge 2025

Hangzhou, China – 29 August 2025 – The Global AgriInno Challenge (GAC) 2025, co-organized by FAO, Zhejiang University, and Pinduoduo, supported by the Foreign Economic Cooperation Center, MARA, P.R.China (FECC) and Government of Binjiang District, Hangzhou City, has concluded after three days of innovation, learning, and collaboration.This year’s competition received 519 applications from 97 countries, the most competitive edition to date. From these, nine youth-led solutions were selected to pitch in Hangzhou, representing Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, China, Thailand, Colombia, Hungary, and the United States.
Day 1 (27 August) brought participants together for the Innovation for Good training programme. After a warm welcome from FAO and Zhejiang University, teams engaged in icebreakers and startup DNA sessions to build growth strategies. Experts shared a global overview of digital agriculture and highlighted cutting-edge innovations. The day ended with a riverside chat where entrepreneurs shared their personal journeys.
Day 2 (28 August) focused on building entrepreneurial skills. Participants explored the Business Model Canvas, storytelling techniques, and scaling strategies through case studies of smart agriculture startups. Afternoon sessions introduced innovative approaches to rural futures and empowering smallholder farmers through smart machinery. The evening closed with a team-building activity to strengthen the entrepreneurial spirit.
Day 3 (29 August) was the highlight of the event – the Global AgriInno Challenge Pitch Day.
During the final, representatives of the organizers and supporting partners shared their insights on advancing sustainable agriculture and innovation. Vincent Martin, Director of the FAO Office of Innovation highlighted the challenges facing global agriculture—rising temperatures, dwindling resources, and fragile supply chains—while noting the opportunity to reimagine farming through AI, blockchain, precision agriculture, and circular economy models. Jianghong Zhou, Vice President of Zhejiang University emphasized the achievements of the Zhejiang University-FAO partnership, which has not only fostered youth innovation but also deepened international exchanges, and promoted sustainable agri-food systems. Kaidi HOU, Vice President of Pinduoduo outlined the importance of GAC as a global platform for young agricultural scientists to exchange ideas and explore “AI + Agriculture,” encouraging participants to turn their innovations into real-world impact. FECC’s representative further emphasized the significance of the GAC for China. Lisheng Wang, Vice Director of Hangzhou High-tech Zone noted that the GAC highlighted its distinctive qualities of internationalization, youthfulness, and innovation, perfectly aligning with Hangzhou’s long-standing spirit of openness, vibrant energy, and innovative ethos, creating a mutually reinforcing effect.
After the opening remarks, nine finalist teams pitched their solutions to an international jury. Each pitch was followed by Q&A, showcasing both the creativity and technical depth of the young innovators. The day concluded with a keynote on youth voices, followed by the much-anticipated awards ceremony

- Bronze – PlantPulse Patch: Biosensor patch monitoring plant stress to optimize yield and reduce resource use.
The Global AgriInno Challenge is an agricultural science and innovation initiative for young agripreneurs worldwide, jointly launched by FAO and Zhejiang University, as part of their long-standing collaboration and their Memorandum of Understanding. It has now developed into a flagship initiative within the FAO innovation system, which aims to bring together the power of global youth, encourage young people to drive the sustainable development of agriculture and food system through digital technology and innovation. Since 2020, the Challenge has been successfully held for 5 editions, with Pinduoduo consistently supporting and participating in the event over the past 5 years.
The Global AgriInno Challenge in 2025 highlighted youth-led innovations advancing climate resilience, supply chain efficiency, and nutritional security, showcasing the next generation of agri-leaders.
FAO, Zhejiang University, and Pinduoduo, co-hosted the ‘2025 Digital Agriculture Innovation Bootcamp’ this year, taking an active role in fostering and connecting young agricultural talents worldwide. The event brought together 18 young agripreneurs from eight countries—including Peru, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Pakistan, and China—who engaged in exchanges with students from the Science and Technology Backyard in Gusheng Village, Dali, Yunnan. Together, they explored innovative agricultural solutions to support farmers and advance the development of digital agriculture.
