Benjamin Danso is a lecturer and the Director of Research at Kumasi Institute of Tropical Agriculture (KITA); a professional farmers’ college located in Kumasi, Ghana. This young researcher was raised in a farming community where he got exposed to the challenge of low crop yield due to inherent varietal differences. At age 12, he visited the CSIR-Crops Research Institute of Ghana where he developed the passion to become a plant scientist. In order to achieve his dream, he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Plant Science and further obtained a Master’s degree in Genetics and Plant Breeding from University of Ghana. He has since been involved in teaching good farm practices and conducting crop improvement researches in Ghana; notable among them is the introgression of insect resistance trait to three local cowpea varieties. Over the course of 5 years, Benjamin has used his experience in research and agriculture to train over 100 young farmers at the Kumasi Institute of Tropical Agriculture (KITA) in the areas of agronomy, agribusiness, plant breeding and genetics. The West African Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) has noticed the potential of this young man and awarded him a scholarship to pursue a PHD programme in Plant Breeding.
