Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global threat of increasing concern to human and animal health. It also has implications for both food safety and food security and the economic well-being of millions of farming households. Food plays an important role in the development and spread of AMR.

Among the ongoing initiatives to tackle this issue, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of the Republic of Korea is hosting the 3rd Global Conference on Foodborne Antimicrobial Resistance on 12 and 13 September 2023. The conference will be also streamed on YouTube for all Codex members and observers, as well as the general audience.

The MFDS has been leading this initiative globally since the conference was first established in September 2021. The conference main objective is to support the implementation of the Codex texts on antimicrobial Resistance adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission in 2021

The eventaims to serve as a forum to bring together all relevant sectorsthroughout the agrifood system:food business operators, academia, regulatory authoritiesgovernmental bodies and international organizations. One of the expected outcomes, among others, is to establish a global platform on implementing Codex AMR-related texts.

The topics under discussion will be:

  • the current status and future possibilities of controlling antimicrobial resistance in food, human healthand the environment; and
