PREFACE

This document is the adopted report of the Second Advisory Committee Meeting of the Aquaculture for Local Community Development Programme. The meeting was hosted by the Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe, and held in Harare, 5–8 October 1988.

The Programme is inter-regional and its preparatory phase 1986–1989, executed by FAO, is funded by Sweden (SIDA). Initially, the Programme focuses on the activities to the SADCC countries.

The main objective of the Programme is to develop, test, and demonstrate strategies, methods, and techniques by which rural populations can improve their standards of living through aquaculture.

During the preparatory phase work concentrated on desk studies, missions and surveys at the regional level and a pilot project in Eastern Province of Zambia. The activities are ultimately aimed at methodology development and are intended to provide the basis for a second phase of the Programme.
