The Brummana DeclarationThe role of Mediterranean forests to fulfill the Nationally Determined Contributions From 1-5 April 2019, the Sixth Mediterranean Forest Week took place in Lebanon and issues such as climate change mitigation and adaptation in the Mediterranean and the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of Mediterranean countries within the Paris Agreement. Throughout this week, the Brummana Declaration was adopted and was meant to serve as a framework for discussing the importance of sustainable forest management and the forest and landscape restoration to address climate change issues in the Mediterranean. Indeed, consistent with Silva Mediterranea's strategies, the Declaration combines the commitments of the Agadir Commitment with the NDCs under the Paris Agreement. Building on the foundation of existing international agreements, frameworks, and country commitments, the Declaration calls for action from local, national, and international political and administrative authorities, and encourages the engagement of all stakeholders involved in the management of forest ecosystems. In this way, actors at all levels can work towards addressing the environmental, economic and social challenges faced by Mediterranean countries for a sustainable future, with Mediterranean forests fulfilling the potential they have to contribute to this goal.
