The function of collecting, analysing, interpreting, and disseminating data and information relating to agriculture (including forest products) is embedded in Article 1 of FAO’s Constitution and has been performed since the establishment of the organization.

FAO's statistical work programme for forest products was initiated as the result of recommendations of the 1945 and 1946 Sessions of the FAO Conference. The programme was reviewed in detail and received formal approval from the Third Session of the FAO Conference at Geneva in 1947. Since then, FAO has been compiling and reporting statistics on production, trade and consumption of forest products every year.

This website brings together all major outputs of the programme since its inception. These include publications, databases, classifications and standards as well as reports of capacity development activities for forest product statistics in member states.
