Capacity Building


The GFOI’s Capacity Building component seeks to understand the needs and facilitate the choices of developing countries in their national forest monitoring systems and associated emissions measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) procedures.

Under the Capacity Building component, GFOI’s partners coordinate the delivery of their direct assistance in to a targeted and streamlined package of support that meets country needs.

Specific activities of the component include:

  • Coordinated assessment of countries' capacity gaps, needs and priorities
  • Harmonized work planning to address countries’ priorities
  • Collaborative training and direct assistance to help meet countries’ monitoring needs and accelerate progress towards delivering on their forest and emissions reporting requirements
  • Training in the use of the GFOI’s Methods and Guidance Document (MGD) and REDDcompass
  • Training in the use of other GFOI partners’ tools, methods & datasets
  • With the MGD Component – identifying and addressing new and enhanced guidance needs 
  • With the Data Coordination Component – identifying and addressing impediments to the use of data and tools to improve monitoring practices
  • With the R&D Component – identifying and addressing issues hindering country progress.

The work of the component is based on the collaborative efforts of GFOI’s partners. It is led by the US SilvaCarbon Programme and the UN FAO National Forest Monitoring (NFM) / REDD+ Team who provide the component management functions, in close collaboration with other GFOI partners.
