FAO takes part in the 6th edition of Halieutis Expo

6 February 2023 - The sixth edition of the Halieutis Exhibition, dedicated to the fisheries and aquaculture sector, was held in Agadir, Morocco, from 1 to 5 February 2023. This edition’s theme was “Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture: levers for an inclusive and efficient Blue Economy.”

Several conferences and discussions were held concurrently with the exhibition. FAO was represented by Dr. Ismahane El Ouafi, Chief Scientist, and Mr. Mohammed Ichibane, Expert in Fish Value Chain. Dr. EL Ouafi participated in the plenary session “Leveraging science, technology, and innovation in fisheries to improve sustainability and secure food production in the eve of the Blue Economy development”. Mr. Ichibane presented FAO’s blue transformation and its role in the sustainability of the fisheries and aquaculture sector within the dialogue “Climate Vs. Fisheries: the path to sustainability is a ridge line that requires a close coordination between all stakeholders”.

The dialogue was organized by the Institut National de Recherche Halieutique (INRH), the Confédération Marocaine des Armateurs Industriels de la Pêche Pélagique Dahkla (COMAIP), the Swiss trade promotion programme for international economic development (SIPPO), the Moroccan Federation of Seafood processing Industries (FENIP) and FAO and moderated by senior fishery and aquaculture expert Mr. Lahsen Ababouch. Participants had the opportunity to hear the perspectives and positions of panelists representing the private sector, research institutions, and development organizations on sustainability issues. The participation of Mauritania’s Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy marked the dialogue. During the debate, there was a broad consensus that sustainability is an issue for all stakeholders, including scientific research and the private sector.

The biennial Halieutis Exhibition is held in Agadir, Morocco. According to the organizers, this edition attracted 340 exhibitors from 49 countries and 50 000 attendees.
