SDG indicators 15.1.1 and 15.2.1 - Forest area and sustainable forest management
This course has been developed to guide countries in reporting on Indicators 15.1.1 and 15.2.1. It illustrates the rationale of the indicators, the definitions and methodologies on which monitoring activities are based, and explains the process and the tools available for compiling data related to the two indicators through the Global Forest Resources Assessment Programme (available in English, French and Spanish).

Los Bosques
Unos bosques saludables son cruciales para la salud del planeta. Estos protegen las cuencas hidrográficas que proveen de agua fresca a más de la mitad de la humanidad. También albergan una fauna salvaje indescriptible, proveen de alimento y forraje para la gente de la montaña y son fuentes importantes de madera y productos no madereros.
Proteger esos bosques y asegurarse que son gestionados cuidadosamente, es un paso importante hacia el desarrollo sostenible de la montaña. En la última década, las selvas tropicales montañosas han ido desapareciendo a un ritmo impresionante. La deforestación es debida normalmente al crecimiento poblacional, la incierta posesión de la tierra, distribución no equitativa de la tierra y la ausencia de instituciones fuertes y estables.
Después de siglos de crecimiento demográfico y uso intensivo del suelo, los bosques de montaña se han reducido a pequeñas zonas verdes. Algunas prácticas forestales y agrícolas que no son sustentables contribuyen a la deforestación incrementando la erosión, amenazando la biodiversidad montañosa y dañando los procesos del ecosistema de bosque.
Cuanta más tierra se degrade, incrementa la probabilidad de que ocurran desastres naturales, como avalanchas, deslizamientos de tierra e inundaciones. Demasiado a menudo, las políticas y decisiones que conciernen a la gestión de los bosques de montaña son hechos desde lejos, dejando con menos poder e influencia a aquellas comunidades que viven en las montañas.
Devolviendo el poder de decisión a la gente de la montaña es uno de los pasos importantes para conseguir aliviar su pobreza, y, por consiguiente, proteger los bosques de las montañas. Medidas que pudieran cumplir con estas metas incluyen reinvertir los beneficios económicos de los bosques en sus comunidades – como guardas primeros de los bosques de montaña- y sus recursos, apoyando derechos de propiedad basados en la organización de la comunidad, descentralizando el poder y la contabilidad, forjando alianzas y promoviendo un escenario intermedio entre el conocimiento local y el científico.
