
The Agriculture and Livestock Service, protected by the Organic Law, is mandated to protect the flora, fauna, and the ecological balance; to preserve the environmental heritage; to defend and conserve the soil and to protect the quality of the water, soil and air.

- The Agriculture and Livestock Service is the official body of the State of Chile, responsible for supporting the development of agriculture, forestry and livestock, through the protection and improvement of the animal and plant health.
- To prevent the introduction of diseases or pests that may affect animals or plants, seriously damaging agriculture. To this end, the Service establishes phyto and zoo sanitary Border Controls, that operate at the points of entry into the country, whether by land, air or sea. Products, transportation, passengers luggage, crew and commercial cargo of forestry, agriculture and livestock products (fruits, milk, cheese, etc.), are inspected there to ensure they comply with the established health regulations.
- To participate in the health certification of animal or vegetable products exports
- To perform action to conserve and improve renewable natural resources, affecting agricultural, livestock and forestry production, seeking to control pollution of irrigation water, conserving the flora and fauna and improving soil resources in order to prevent erosion and maintain productivity.
- To ensure that manufactured food and medicine for animals, are safe and do not cause disorders in their health, and that the chemical and biological products used to control plant pests, comply with the manufacturing standards.
The environmental competences of The Agriculture and Livestock Service, through its participation in the system of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the Organic Law, are the soil defense and conservation, the protection of wild flora and fauna (including the ecological balance protection and the environmental heritage conservation) and the prevention of natural resources pollution or protection of the quality of air, soil and water.
