|
| Key Result |
China has a proven record of successful expertise and technologies to promote the sustainable control of the locust. The country has developed six technologies that could be shared with/transferred to other countries through South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC): (i) biological control; (ii) ecological control; (iii) use of natural enemies; (iv) ultra-low volume spraying (ULV); (v) precise spraying by aircraft; (vi) use of information technology.
- Ethiopia: Project contributed to the treatment of 72 000 hectares of area infested by the desert locus in Ethiopia, averting the loss of 144 000 tonnes of crops, valued at an estimated USD 43 million.
- Iran: On the whole, 313 000 ha were treated through ground and aerial operations as a result of the project.
- Pakistan: FAO procured and distributed ten single-cabin vehicles for the mounting of Ultra-Low Volume sprayers to strengthen the country’s capacities in the desert locust control operations. As a result of the effective surveillance and control operations carried out in the country, no significant presence of desert locust was observed.
- Kenya: Together with other projects, ground teams and aerial teams surveyed a total of 93 036 322 ha. The survey results informed control decisions in which a total of 91 332 ha was treated during the project period. A total of 30 national Government administration officers were trained on desert locust survey and reporting, and 44 scouts were trained on desert locust control.
- Uganda: the project provided three capacity development courses on the eLocust3 platform, desert locust identification and behavior for 71 officials from district local governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
