Summary report of the International Symposium on “Forest Biotechnology for Smallholders”. Organized by EMBRAPA Florestas (Brazilian Agricultural Research Institute for Forests, Paraná) and FAO, the symposium took place on 19-22 May 2015 in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, Brazil. The 60-page report as well as a 33-page FAO background document entitled “Current Status of Biotechnology Development and Application in Forestry” are available from the symposium website in English. 

2014

  • Narrative report of the Technical Consultation on low levels of GM crops in international food and feed trade. FAO held the Technical Consultation on 20-21 March 2014 at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. Prior to the meeting, FAO prepared three technical background documents on "Low levels of GM crops in food and feed: Regulatory issues"; "Low levels of GM crops in international food and feed trade: FAO international survey and economic analysis"; and “The results of the FAO survey on low levels of genetically modified (GM) crops in international food and feed trade”. The 40-page report is available in English while the three background documents are available in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish from the meeting website.
  • Ten lessons from biotechnology experiences in crops, livestock and fish for smallholders in developing countries. Written by J.D. Dargie, J. Ruane and A. Sonnino, this article in the Asian Biotechnology and Development Review presents an analysis of 19 case studies commissioned by FAO where agricultural biotechnologies were used to serve the needs of smallholders in developing countries.
