Summary report of the International Symposium on “Forest Biotechnology for Smallholders”. Organized by EMBRAPA Florestas (Brazilian Agricultural Research Institute for Forests, Paraná) and FAO, the symposium took place on 19-22 May 2015 in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, Brazil. The 60-page report as well as a 33-page FAO background document entitled “Current Status of Biotechnology Development and Application in Forestry” are available from the symposium website in English.
- Narrative report of the Technical Consultation on low levels of GM crops in international food and feed trade. FAO held the Technical Consultation on 20-21 March 2014 at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. Prior to the meeting, FAO prepared three technical background documents on "Low levels of GM crops in food and feed: Regulatory issues"; "Low levels of GM crops in international food and feed trade: FAO international survey and economic analysis"; and “The results of the FAO survey on low levels of genetically modified (GM) crops in international food and feed trade”. The 40-page report is available in English while the three background documents are available in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish from the meeting website.
- Ten lessons from biotechnology experiences in crops, livestock and fish for smallholders in developing countries. Written by J.D. Dargie, J. Ruane and A. Sonnino, this article in the Asian Biotechnology and Development Review presents an analysis of 19 case studies commissioned by FAO where agricultural biotechnologies were used to serve the needs of smallholders in developing countries. - Biotechnologies for agricultural development. This 592-page book represents the proceedings of the FAO international technical conference on "Agricultural biotechnologies in developing countries: Options and opportunities in crops, forestry, livestock, fisheries and agro-industry to face the challenges of food insecurity and climate change" (ABDC-10), that took place in Guadalajara, Mexico on 1-4 March 2010. The first section contains ten chapters with an extensive series of FAO background documents prepared before ABDC-10 took place. The second section contains five chapters dedicated to the outcomes of ABDC-10.

- Biosafety resource book. Based on materials from training courses organized by FAO from 2002 to 2010 in the framework of its biosafety capacity development projects, this book consists of five modules dedicated respectively to molecular biology and genetic engineering; ecological aspects; risk analysis; test and post-release monitoring of GMOs; and legal aspects.

A Working Document (number CGRFA-13/11/3) prepared by FAO for the 13th Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, that took place on 18-22 July 2011 at FAO Headquarters, Rome. - Biotechnologies for the management of genetic resources for food and agriculture. By P. Lidder and A. Sonnino, this 149-page document was published by the FAO Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture as document 52 in its Background Study Paper series. 1.2 MB.
- FAO Biotechnology Glossary – Chinese, Polish and Kazakh versions. The Chinese version was translated from English by the FAO translation group and reviewed by J. Zhao and X. Ma. The Polish version was translated by I. Bartkowiak-Broda, Z. Broda, D. Grzebelus, A. Korwin-Kossakowska, K. Niemirowicz-Szczytt and E. Zimnoch-Guzowska. Through an arrangement with FAO, the Institute of Plant Biology and Biotechnology (IPBB) in Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan, published the tri-lingual dictionary containing the original English glossary terms plus their Russian and Kazakh translations.

- Biosafety of genetically modified organisms: Basic concepts, methods and issues. Edited by M.K.A. Chowdhury, M.I. Hoque and A. Sonnino, this 293-page book comprises the proceedings of the training course that took place in Gazipur, Bangladesh on 21-30 November 2008 as part of a technical cooperation programme (TCP) project, implemented jointly by FAO and the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC).
- Induced plant mutations in the genomics era. Edited by Q.Y. Shu, this 458-page publication represents the proceedings of the International Symposium on Induced Mutations in Plants, held on 12-15 August 2008 in Vienna, Austria, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and FAO through the Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture.
- Building biosafety capacities: FAO's experience and outlook. A 53-page book by A. Sensi, K. Ghosh, M. Takeuchi and A. Sonnino, which is the result of an in-depth review of FAO's capacity building activities in biosafety and which presents an overview of 26 biosafety capacity building projects launched by FAO since 2002. ABDC-10 report [ - 279 KB]. Final 52-page report of the ABDC-10 conference that took place in Guadalajara, Mexico on 1-4 March 2010. The FAO conference was hosted by the Government of Mexico and co-sponsored by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Available in Arabic, Chinese, English, French and Spanish.
FAO's policy and technical assistance on biotechnology for food and agriculture, and matters relevant to codes of conduct, guidelines, or other approaches. Working document CGRFA-12/09/17, prepared by FAO for the 12th Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA), held at FAO Headquarters, Rome, on 19-23 October 2009. A training package developed for a target audience that includes national food safety regulators, authorities, and/or scientists tasked with training others to undertake the safety assessment of foods derived from recombinant-DNA plants. A publication presenting the outcome of the work of the Codex Alimentarius Commission on principles and guidelines for food safety assessment of foods derived from modern biotechnology. Available in English, French and Spanish. Reports of regional consultations on plant breeding and related biotechnology capacity. To analyze the results of a worldwide assessment carried out by GIPB, FAO and partners on national plant breeding and related biotechnology capacity, four regional e-consultations were held (Latin America and Caribbean; South-Eastern and Southern Asia; Sub-Saharan Africa; and Western Asia and Northern Africa). For each one, a background note and consultation report is available. Coping with water scarcity: What role for biotechnologies? Khetarpal, published by FAO, the Asia-Pacific Consortium on Agricultural Biotechnology (APCoAB) and the Asia-Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions (APAARI). Bioenergy and biotechnology papers. Prepared by three invited speakers for the FAO seminar on "The role of agricultural biotechnologies for production of bioenergy in developing countries" held on 12 October 2007 in Rome, Italy.
