To enhance the knowledge base and support the uptake of good practices for ongoing work on adaptation planning, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of best adaptation practices, FAO organized a series of webinar sessions on “Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) in the Agriculture Sector” in 2017 and 2018. This document serves to outline the priority nature-based interventions for adaptation in the food and agriculture sector as articulated in countries’ nationally determined contributions (NDCs), and as illustrated through the best case practices showcased during the EbA webinar series.

This document provides a conceptual framework and standard methodologies for the monitoring, reporting and verification of changes in SOC stocks and GHG emissions/removals from agricultural projects that adopt sustainable soil management practices (SSM) at farm level. It is intended to be applied in different agricultural lands, including annual and perennial crops (food, fibre, forage and bioenergy crops), paddy rice, grazing lands with livestock including pastures, grasslands, rangelands, shrublands, silvopasture and agroforestry. Although developed for projects carried out at farm level, potential users include investors, research institutions, government agencies, consultants, agricultural companies, NGOs, individual farmers or farmer associations, supply chain and other users who are interested in measuring and estimating SOC stocks and changes and GHG emissions in response to management practices.

Climate change is causing unprecedented damage to our ecosystem. Increasing temperatures, ocean warming and acidification, severe droughts, wildfires, altered precipitation patterns, melting glaciers, rising sea levels and amplification of extreme weather events have direct implications for our food systems. While the impacts of such environmental factors on food security are well known, the effects on food safety receive less attention. The purpose of Climate change: Unpacking the burden on food safety is to identify and attempt to quantify some current and anticipated food safety issues that are associated with climate change. The food safety hazards considered in the publication are foodborne pathogens and parasites, harmful algal blooms, pesticides, mycotoxins and heavy metals with emphasis on methylmercury.

L'élevage constitue le moyen de subsistance de plus de 750 millions de personnes qui figurent parmi les plus pauvres au monde Cette brochure montre que l’amélioration de la santé animale faire partie intégrante des stratégies visant bâtir la sécurité alimentaire et le développement durable dans un contexte de changements climatiques. 

Premièrement, pour réduire les impacts des changements climatiques sur la santé animale et la propagation des agents pathogènes - car la majorité des maladies émergentes sont d'origine animale. Deuxièmement, pour atténuer les effets des changements climatiques, car des animaux en meilleure santé sont plus productifs et génèrent moins d'émissions par poids de produit fini. Troisièmement, pour s'adapter aux changements climatiques - car les animaux sont plus résistants que les cultures pour s'adapter aux conditions marginales et résister aux chocs climatiques.
