NIGERIA LEGISLATION
-Fishing in exclusive economic zone (i.e., 30 - 200 miles) also apparently reserved for Nigerian flag vessels.
-Foreign tag vessels may be licensed only to fish outside Nigerian EEZ, although they may land fish in Nigeria.
-Licence fees are the following:
Under 20 GRT = N. 40 (annual) or N. 12 (quarterly)
20 - 199 GRT = N. 100 (annual) or N. 30 (quarterly)
200 - 999 GRT = N. 400 (annual) or No. 60 (quarterly)
1 000 GRT and above = N. 400 (annual) or No. 120 (quarterly).

LEGISLATION
-Fishing reserved for Nigerian flag vessels.
-Foreign fishing allowed only under joint venture with Nigerian national interests.
-All joint ventures must have at least 51% of their capital provided by Nigerian nationals.

AGREEMENTS
Agreement with Equatorial Guinea of 27 November 1981
Nigerian vessel
is defined as a vessel owned by the Nigerian government or by a Nigerian company flying the Nigerian flag, whose crew is made up of not less than 50% African nationals; and belonging to a company whose capital is owned no less than 50% by Nigerians. (Art.11)

NIGERIA LEGISLATION
Exploitation of natural resources of waters under national jurisdiction reserved to Nigeria, unless it is subject to provisions of any treaty to which Nigeria is a party. (Sect. 2(2))

-Prohibition on industrial fishing within 2 miles of coast.
-Provision relating to use of nets, trawls.
-All catch must be landed in port, and no part of it may be exported or transhipped at sea.
-Fish landed by shrimp trawlers must be at least 75 % by weight of total landings.
(Sea Fisheries (Fishing) Regulations, 1972)
-No person shall operate in National waters without a licence issued for the vessel. (Sect. 1)
-Shipowner may introduce a licence application for the vessel, made in a prescribed form to Licensing Officer.
-Licence shall include vessel specifications and a statement concerning intended methods of fishing, estimated areas for fishing operations, and arrangements related to catch preservation and marketing in Nigeria. (Sect. 2)

- Numbers represent periodicity of reports(in days / hours) or deadlines For submission of reports; W = weekly; D = daily; M = monthly; R = on request .
% = Reports must be made every 3 days for vessels from Norway, Sweden and Faroes when fishing for herring, weekly when fishing for other species .
O = Logbook to be filled out(radio report to be made) after every fishing operation .
* = Country is a part to the South Pacific FFA arrangement which stipulates that licences will not be issued to foreign fishing vessels unless those vessels are listed in good standing on the FFA - maintained regional register of fishing vessels .
