FAO's strategy for the sustainable use of local feed resources

FAO's programme for the sustainable use of local feed resources is peered mainly towards small farmers with limited land, capital and training. It aims to develop integrated feeding systems that are tailored to local resources and that will raise farmer incomes while protecting the environment and saving on energy and fertilizer use With this in mind, maximum use must be made of available biomass, coupled with appropriate supplementation. Alternatives to the cereal imports that cost developing countries thousands of millions of dollars each year must also be found. The FAO Feed Resources Group is currently seeking to develop a range of appropriate technologies for application by small farmers through networks and field projects. It is also working on a new feed and feeding information system that will eventually have worldwide coverage.
