By means of a Transversal Project, co-funded by the EU and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) coordinates, supports and consolidates the implementation of the EU Land Governance Programme. The European Union Land Governance Programme funds 18 individual country-level projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America, all of which address tenure issues, and are implemented alongside various partners, among which are government agencies, civil society organizations, bilateral and multilateral organizations and private contractors. All project activities are carried out within the framework of the VGGT and, in the African context, the African Union Declaration on Land Issues and Challenges in Africa (AU Declaration) and its Framework and Guidelines on Land Policy in Africa (F&G).

This checklist seeks to provide companies with operational guidance on how to ensure due diligence when operating in areas where projects may affect indigenous peoples. Based on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and ILO Convention No. 169, this Checklist aligns the principles and rights in these two instruments with the human rights due diligence approach set out in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. It outlines key questions business should consider in engagement with indigenous peoples and their communities.

December 9th to 15th 2013: 120 pastoralist leaders representing communities in 48 countries worldwide gathered in Kiserian, Kenya, to share experiences and concerns about the Global Transition to a Green Economy. Pastoralism—the extensive production of livestock in rangeland ecosystems—is one of the most environmental friendly food systems on earth, but its potential to provide meat, milk and fibre as well as environmental services, such as climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation and protection of water sheds, is continuously eroded by poorly conceived policies and investments, by neglectof basic human rights, and by disruption to appropriate rangeland management practices, including mobility.
