V - ACTORS AND MEANS AVAILABLE

5-1 Organizations involved

The possible principal actors are the following:

- Ministry of Agriculture and Cattle Raising (Rural Development Service)
- Ministry for Research
- French University of the Pacific
- Research Institute Louis Malardé - Chemistry Laboratory for natural substances
- Department of the Environment
- Artisanal Service

5-2 Information sources

Information sources are found distributed throughout the organizations noted above. There is a territorial herbarium at the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands. The Harrison Smith botanical garden contains some interesting species but also, according to the Miconia specialist, potentially invasive species.

Existing publications relate especially to the field of the battle against invading species, and mission reports (Research Delegation).

5-3 Training and equipment needs

It would be useful to set up a forest genetics laboratory which would:

- make or co-ordinate the necessary inventories and studies
- identify priority species and habitats
- manage:

- the identified species on the ground.
- the arboretum and the reserves

- organize necessary training, as well as communication activities.
