Annex 2 - Survey of Forestry Education in Africa

Introduction

In this report, the preliminary results of a survey of 20 institutions teaching forestry in Africa are reported. The African Network for Agroforestry Education (ANAFE) implemented the survey in November and December 2002 with funding from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The main objective of the survey was to establish trends in forestry education and training in Africa South of Sahara (SSA) over the last ten years and make recommendations. The specific objectives were:

• To establish an overview and analysis of the number of forestry graduates in selected countries in Africa over the last ten years. From the analysis, to establish trends in forestry education
• To understand the changed roles of the forester and relate that with curriculum developments
• To capture the funding situation over the same years; and
• To set and prioritize Africa's forestry education needs.

Altogether twenty institutions responded to a questionnaire survey. Annex 1 shows institutions that responded, and Annex 2 shows the actual questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Excel programme to facilitate easy presentation of trends by charts. Supplementary data were gathered from records available with ANAFE and through telephone interviews.
