Abstract

The objectives of the Seminar on Networking held in Tunisia on April 24–25, 1991 were to review the networking conception and experiences of several institutions and to set up the appropriate mechanisms for a fruitful and durable regional cooperation.

As the implementation of networks is the main objective of the Project, it was stressed the national input and commitment for the successful implementation of MEDRAP II, and recommended the constitution of a National Committee for Aquaculture in each respective country.

After review of the sub-regional meetings report and project work plan, held in Tunisia on March 7–19, 1991, the Seminar recommended the constitution of the following five sub-networks: Training, Research, Information, Production and Extension.

The papers presented by the various invited experts expressed the experiences of their institutions, such as the International Service for National Agricultural Research (ISNAR), the Priority Action Programme/Regional Activity Centre (PAP/RAC), the Network Aquaculture Centre in Asia (NACA), the European Community (EC), etc…besides those of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).

Acknowledgements

The Editior would like to thank the Tunisian Authorities namely H.E. the Minister of Agriculture who emphasized by his presence the full support of the Tunisian Government to the project in general and to the promotion of the sector in particular; and the «Commissariat Général à la Pêche» for the remarkable help and assistance they have provided for the organisation of the Seminar.

The Editor would like also to thank the specialized agencies for accepting to share with the Member Countries Representatives their conception of networking to better conceive the structures and mechanisms of a Mediterranean cooperation.

Note from the reviser

The revision and publication of this document could only be done along time after the closure of the project. This has led to some difficulties in finalising the documents and implementing corrections, because authors and contributors as well as some of the original material or files were no longer available.

Therefore contributions from participants and session papers annexed to most of the documents were left in their original form. No language corrections were introduced, the content was not modified and left under their respective authors' responsibility.

Considering the above, we hope that the reader will understand that a standard of publication could not be maintained on a level as high as we would have liked it to be.
