Morocco is a signatory to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. There are Constitutional and legislative guarantees of the rights of women and equality between the sexes. In addition, the government began to revise the personal code (the Moudouana) in 1993 to improve the rights of women in marriage and divorce. However, legislation in regard to contracts and business requires women to obtain the authorization of their husbands in order to work or exercise a profession. Moreover, discriminatory practices remain in spite of legislation to the contrary, particularly in the areas of access to property, wages, and participation in decision-making bodies.
