The cruise tracks and fishing stations for the four coverages of the Colombian coast are shown in Figure 3.8.1. Technical problems with the vessel unfortunately curtailed the full planned survey effort in several of the surveys. This particularly affected the work west of Sta. Marta. Thus the Gulf of Uraba was only included in the first survey and the fourth survey only extended to Sta. Marta. The area in the east off the Guajira Peninsula which had been designated highest priority was, however, well covered in all of the surveys.
An important environmental feature of the area is the upwelling north and west of the Guajira Peninsula. As described in chapter 2.1 on hydrography above this phenomenon was found to be rather local and not very pronounced, strongest in winter, weak in the summer and autumn observations.
It was found convenient to describe the results of the investigations on the resources for separate areas. The shelf from the Guajira Peninsula to Sta. Marta and the shelf further west.
