Pulses and soils: a dynamic duo

Pulses are more than just a nutritious food source, they are a key ally in sustainable agriculture. Rich in protein and essential nutrients, legumes like beans, lentils, and chickpeas not only support food security but also play a crucial role in maintaining healthy soils. Through biological nitrogen fixation, they enrich the soil with nitrogen, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. Their deep root systems enhance soil structure, improving water retention and resilience against erosion.

Beyond soil health, pulses contribute to biodiversity and climate resilience. They support microbial life, increasing soil fertility and suppressing pests naturally, reducing reliance on agrochemicals. Their genetic diversity also allows for the selection of climate-resilient varieties, helping farmers adapt to extreme weather. In intercropping systems, such as those in Tanzania and Bangladesh, pulses improve yields while enhancing overall soil quality.

As we celebrate World Pulses Day, FAO underscores their vital role in transforming agrifood systems. By integrating pulses into crop rotations, we can foster healthier soils, more resilient food systems, and better nutrition for all.
